Spanish football giants FC Barcelona started their pre-season training campaign yesterday and whilst Champions League rivals Liverpool and Chelsea head off to sunnier climates, Barca have chosen the English countryside.
The squad, including 2010 World Cup winners Gerard Piqué, Andrés Iniesta and Jordi Alba arrived at St. George’s Park on Monday to begin their 2014/2015 preparations.
The facilities at St. George’s Park, used by all the England Football squads, will offer the La Liga giants a choice of 12 pitches including a full-size indoor 3G pitch.
Off the pitch, the Barcelona squad will be working hard in Perform's human performance, fitness and sports science facilities.
The Human Performance Lab run by Perform, Part of Spire Healthcare will allow Barcelona’s coaching and medical team access to extensive sports science testing for their team. Equipment in the cutting-edge lab includes an AlterG treadmill, allowing athletes to run under reduced gravity conditions and an Altitude Chamber, recently used by the England squad to prepare for Manaus.
Piqué, Iniesta and co will then be able to head to the impressively-equipped Strength and Conditioning Gym, with a panoramic view of the Wembley Replica Pitch.
With a hard day’s training complete, the players can unwind and recover in Perform’s state-of-the art Hydrotherapy Suite, complete with an underwater treadmill, hot spa and cold plunge pool.
Andoni Zubizarreta, the FC Barcelona Director of Football, commented;
“FC Barcelona is thrilled to be going to St. George’s Park for a pre-season training camp. We will be able to work peacefully in an exceptional football setting, with perfect indoor and outdoor facilities that make us believe that the work atmosphere will be excellent.”
